Support for the Counselling and Psychological Support Unit (CaPSU)

In recognition of the increasing need to enhance mental health support for students at the University of Peradeniya, the university authorities have established the Counselling and Psychological Support Unit (CaPSU) within the Health Centre as of 2022.

This initiative aims to address not only the typical pressures associated with academic life but also the social and behavioral challenges that many students encounter. Since its inception, CaPSU has been operating successfully, providing assistance to an average of 1,000 students annually with the support of six dedicated counsellors and a team of mental health professionals. The estimated annual operating cost for this unit is AUD 30,000, reflecting current exchange rates.

Given the high demand for services, there is a compelling need to expand CaPSU’s offerings. One proposed enhancement includes the transition to a 24/7 support service, which could be accomplished through the implementation of an on-call system. This expansion project will require a comprehensive cost analysis. We are collaborating closely with the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya, CaPSU, and the Vice-Chancellor to gather further information for our community. We encourage you to stay informed about upcoming developments.

We invite you to participate in our “Give-Back Journey” and contribute generously to this critical aspect of student well-being, with the assurance that your contributions will be managed with professionalism and directed towards the intended purpose.
